Physiological characteristics of piglets digestion

Piglets digestive organ and function need a period to growth before mature. There are some remrkable characteristics for digestion in piglets gastrointestinal tract,which is differen from growth pig,e.g.secretion volume of gastric juice,gastric acid,digestive enzyme in gastric juice,ad enteral digesstion,etc.

Acidity of gastric acid:Lack of hydrochloric acid is the most important characteristic to new born piglets. Although gastric gland can secrete a little of hydrochloric acid,they quickly combine with gastric mucus.And free hydrochloric acid can not be detected by titration method. Bactericidal activity of gastric juice mainly depends  on the concentration of free hydrochloric acid.

Gastric digestive enzyme:Digestive enzyme in gastric juice of piglet is mainly pepsin and chymosin.Chymosin has already had effect on new born piglet and stronger with growing up.Gastric juice of one-day-old piglet has already existed propepsin,and  its concentration is increasing in 36 weeks,but its effect is played after 20 days old. That is because of lack of hydrochloric and it can note be activated. Digestive ability of pepsin is continuously enhanced after weaning.

Intestinal digfestion: At the age of lack of hydrochloric acid in the stomach juice,digestive function is weak in the piglets stomach. Food is mainly digested by pancreatic juice and intestinal juice in the smallintestine. As age  in the days increasing,stomach digestive function is gradually completed;digestive action becomes mopre and more importance to feed.

Therefore,there are two main reasons caused piglet diarrhea:First,there is not enough free hydrochloric acid to kill exotic harmful bacteria,soit causes harmful bacteria come into large intestine growth and reproduction; Second,stomach digestive function

is not complete and pepsin couldnt be activated completely used in digestion,result in nutritional diarrhea.

To the reasons above,the principles of adding exogenous acidifier is that ,both it can kill batcteria and activate pepsin in stomach,meanwhile partly come into small intestine to stimulate secretion of digestive juice at the end of alimentary tractt and also not allow to destroy gastric mucosa nd make alkaline substance to lose activity at the end of small intesine.
